How about hiring a car for a while?

phone a taxi company and ask for a weekly rate
  • Hi,

Sorry, I'm pretty sure you're not entitled to any help. It is your responsibility to be able to get to work and back. If you are unable, then they will consider this that you are unable to perform the duties you are expected and are able to discipline/sack you.

I was in the same situation a few years back. I ended up hiring a runabout which cost me £100 a week. Not ideal but needs must.

Assuming it's your personal car, it's not really your employer's problem. You choose to work where you do, so you need to get to work.

Obviously there are some solutions - taxi part way, hire a car, bus then car share, take leave etc. But essentially it's not your employer's problem that your car isn't working / available.

What do you want them to do, out of interest?

It's not your employer's fault that you don't have transport. You need to be pro-active and come up with a solution yourself.

Book leave, even if couple of days as unpaid

Mind boggles a little how an employer would be OK with someone living so far away, don't get me wrong it broke my heart giving up job which was a 100 mile round trip but needs must when you don't bring the money in for long journey, the company were very nice about it, the new boss says give a little and you'll get it back 10 fold, well that's from the top man of the company so go higher up if you can if that is the line manager talking and not understanding xx

Find a nearer job, minimum wage is minimum wage after all.
One you can walk to and it equates to a pay rise.

I understand that its my problem at the end of the day its just Ive never been in this situation before. I am buying a cheap £300 runaround next week but min wage and to get £300 is about 2 weeks for me.

I wont have £300 until 2 weeks. I have been their for 3 years I like my job and I have been a good asset to them considering the compliments I have gained and customers feedback but for them to not allow my leave for 1 week as its "short notice" I only found out yesterday the guy I share with is off next week.

I totally understand its my problem but I just find it hard they can expect me to still get to work :/ when considering I haven't got my car wasn't exactly my plan and something I could control.

weekly taxi rate sounds like a good idea I will plan that tomorrow

Get a bike. A £15 taxi fare cld be no more than a 10 miles journey. Easily bikeable in the time it takes to wait around for buses and trains. Or just bike and catch train part way

Can easily pick a bike up for under £30 second hand, or maybe someone has one you cld borrow til you sort a car

Have you thought about a small motorbike rather than getting a new car, maybe cheaper.
