strange icon appeared on desktop

A strange thermometer like icon appeared on the left hand side of my desktop (windows 8)It seems to be some sort of sound monitor when clicked middle bit rises then drops.I now have no sound.Have done scans and it disappears for a short while, but soon returns.Does anyone have any ideas what this is.
many thanks Jacky

  • When you say left hand side of your Desktop, do you mean the left hand side of the Taskbar?

Have you accidentally pinned something to the Taskbar?

If so (and you want rid of it), right click the icon, and left click "Unpin this program from taskbar"

ok , desktop not tablet , rules out surface pro.

please go to control panel add/remove programmes and look for any CPU temp progs or even window weather proggys , you may have d/loaded a proggy with bundled junk on another proggy

there is no mention on google for your probs on a std 8/8.1 machine , so it must be an added proggy

The 'no sound' bit intrigues me and I still think this icon may be something to do with volume control. Is it possible that you have hit the Mute button on your keyboard. If so, pressing the Volume Down or preferably Volume Up buttons should un-mute it and reactivate sound.
