Virginmedia

Hi just wondering what rights I have. Joined Virginmedia around 8 months ago and they gave me a second hand landline number. I have had several calls for the previous owner of the number. This evening I had bailifs turn up at my door trying to gain access to my property for the previous registered owner of my phone number. They finally left after showing them my driving license and passport to prove I am not the person they are looking for. They then told me they will be back tomorrow with the police because they didn't believe I wasn't the person they were looking for. I have phoned virginmedia and have now got a brand new number but still have to deal with the bailifs again tomorrow this time with the police. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If they do show up, I doubt the police will be too impressed with the bailiffs when you show your id.

They may be just trying to scare you.

    Hi Lee

Did the bailiffs say what type of debt they were actually collecting for?

Bailiffs sometimes threaten to bring the police for a Magistrates’ Court fine so you could try contacting your local Magistrates’ Court to ask whether they have any fines associated with your address details. If they do, ask them to update the details to clarify the debtor doesn’t live at your address.

It is very unusual for the police to actually get involved in a bailiff matter anyway, despite the threats of the bailiffs.

EDIT - I hadn't seen happy_bunny's post but I agree, it could well be scare tactics to try to get a payment from you.

I'm guessing they weren't (court appointed) bailiffs, just low life debt collector scum. On a point of principle you should not disclose driving licence etc. to such people. Just order them off your property. If they were just the scum they won't return with the police.
