Small default after weeks contacting to arrange

Hi I've ended up with a small default of £179 for a catalogue. Basically started occurring charges and fell behind after back injury and no work as a result, but anyway I've been in contact with the company and spoke/emailed on a few occasions trying to resolve the matter which I was planning to clear off over a couple months but just needed to know who to pay as they started sending different letters from different departments. One of my last emails stating all of this was sent on 6th may and on 8th of May according to recent letter the account was closed and passed to a collector. I appreciate its my fault, but I've tried to get answers from them with little or very little help back on their part and now it'll be a defaulted account and it's after I've been speaking to them? Why would they do that and basically cause a pretty bad stain on the file for 6 yrs when I'm trying to square it up? They just passed me from dept to dept and collector and each one couldn't deal with it because it wasn't in their possession as had been passed back, so back to original dept and they don't have it back yet give it a few days!! ??
It'll be paid off in a few weeks but can or should I complain about the way they handled it as I believe they've handled it a tad poorly?
Thanks for your time

Yes you can complain. Do so in writing.
Sounds like here, late payments or an arrangement to pay of some kind would be more appropriate. Bearing in mind it's better than a default but stays for 6 years on your credit file from when the account is paid off.
Make sure in your complaint you emphasise you tried to come to an arrangement but were passed from pillar to post, were left confused, etc.
If no joy, refer to FOS.
