Bathroom paint

Hi all,

I'm in the process of decorating my en suite shower room and I was wondering if I could get away with using vinyl silk paint instead of the more expensive bathroom paints.

I've used the vinyl silk in the kids bathroom (I've got quite a lot left over) and it's holding up really well. My only concern with using it to paint the en suite is that both my husband and I shower daily and it can get quite humid in there.

Will vinyl silk hold up well in that environment or am I going to have to spend a bit extra on proper bathroom paint.

Thanks in advance

I tried this to begin with in my bathroom and we've had heaps of trouble with it.

I wish we'd just spent the extra money in the first place as we've now spent loads on different primers to get the paint to stick to the walls.

I've had specialist decorators out to look as well.

This might just be my awful walls (we'd had the whole house plastered inside and out before painting) so I doubt it. But I'd just pay the extra if you can afford it!

The previous owners just put normal paint in one of our bathrooms. It's not even used that often as I usually shower in the other bathroom but after 6 months it looks awful where the walls have got condensation on them and the paint has started to come off.
We are going to have to redo it soon with bathroom paint, so definitely go with that from the start even if it's a bit more money.

Possibly you could do a couple of coats in the vinyl silk then put bathroom paint over the top so you'd have to do less coats in the more expensive stuff
  • As said above - save yourself the problems that you WILL get & use bathroom paint.
FYI if you have a B&M store near you, they do the Johnstones bathroom paint for (iirc) £16 & it's good stuff .

    No, you can't.

The biggest problem I found using non bathroom paint is the steam generated discolours the paint after a while and you then have to paint again as well as blistering.
