Holiday to Greece this summer

If tourism drops because of people being too scared to go or finding things too expensive when they get there the country will be ruined completley, the Greeks want to look after their valuable tourist trade and will do all they can to keep the tourists happy and coming back.
Enjoy your trip, it will be wonderful.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
There is never a perfect time to book. The way Greece is going, things can change any minute. We went to the Peloponnese last year and loved it.
Have a great trip!

My OH is Greek so we go a few times a year and nothings really changed on the surface. It's only when you get talking to people, or when you buy petrol and you're offered a 'second receipt'.
We're off to Aegina, Athens and Crete in 5 weeks and I can't wait. We're staying with his family in Athens and in family run hotels on the islands. I always make a point there of staying in family owned places right on the beach instead of the resort hotels which can be Spanish owned.0 -
Hi
Do people think it is wise to book a holiday to a Greek island for this summer. I've hear all sorts of rumours about the Greek government raising VAT in restaurants and hotels. Also, I'm a bit concerned about their Euro status
Any thoughts?

Only last week i booked some flights,i rang a nice greek chap i know and i did a cash only deal on some accomodation. Thats how it all works. Cash is king in greece.
Tavernas, bars ,restaurants..all cash..dont go in there waving a card !
The Greek economy might be shot but the people are lovely, then there is the country, the beaches, the culture,music...whats not to like ..Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Don't you think it's because 'cash is king' that the Government is doing so badly?0

The fact that cash is king is one of the reasons their economy is in the toiletChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0

Just got back, don't take sterling to change into euros abroad the rate offered was between 1.28 - 1.31, take your euros with you.0

Cash is king in any country in the world including the UK.I always take cash wherever I go to pay for hotels, food etc and it saves me a fortune as I never fail to score a deal.
As for the OP there's never a bad time to go to Greece. In many ways the economic crisis will do the Greek tourist industry a power of good as it'll force them to go back to what they did the best - great hospitality and friendship.
I sometimes found in latter years the Greeks were resting on their laurels and taking tourists for granted.Prices were too expensive and they, like Spain, paid the price for this as holidaymakers went elsewhere for a better deal, notably places in Eastern Europe and Turkey.
I'm going back again this Autumn for the first time in half a dozen years to see how things are panning out.0
