Over £1200 In Credit With Scotish Power

As the title states I'm £1200 in credit with the above provider SCOTISH POWER and want some advice on what to do.
Have generally been good with keeping an eye on our finances but obviously not this one !!!
We started off around 4years ago on a fixed dual fuel rate of £130 a month direct debit, which increased to £190 around 14 months ago.
A lot of the meter readings were estimated until 6 months ago when I have emailed them every month.
Have just had my yearly account overview and my direct debit is reducing to £120 but they still have £1200 of my money. Have been in credit for over a year ago. Advice very much appreciated please.

The main advice is to ask for it back and make sure that you read your meters, check your bills and only pay for what you use in the future.

Would you be so keen if you were £1200 in debit and they were jumping all over you for the same reason.

It's your fault for not keeping an eye on your bills.

I know it's my own fault. I just wanted some advice on what to do, thought this was the place to get it, but thank you for taking the time to reply.

Agreed. And ask how long it will take for it to be returned.

Hopefully you won't have any difficulties but if you do then post back here. (SP's customer service is bad even for an energy company so don't be too surprised if things don't go as planned.)

There is a section on their website where, providing you have just sent in your meter readings, you can adjust the monthly direct debit and possibly even apply for a refund. With being so much in credit you should be able to bring it down well below the current figure.

oh and welcome to this wonderful forum!

If you have had an annual DD review and you are in credit by more than about £50 they are required to automatically refund you under OFGEM rules.

I asked for my credit back and it was paid into the bank within a week. They then re-credited it to my account, so I still have a huge credit.

With any other company, I would tell them, but SP have been so utterly incompetent that I will wait for them to discover it.

Assuming they "recredited" it back using a Direct Debit, tell your bank they have made a mistake and ask for it back. Then cancel the DD until they sort their systems out. In the meantime pay them using a standing order etc.

Caveat Emptor. Most tariffs have payment by DD as a condition of the contract. Cancelling a DD for whatever reason can be construed as a breach of contract which, may, result in a move to the supplier's standard variable tariff.

I don't think I phrased this very well. They paid the excess into my bank account, having debited it from my online account. Next day, they credited it back to my online account but didn't take it back from my bank account. Therefore, I am quids in. They also managed to pay my Ombudsman penalty twice.
