House Move Checklist...

Hello,

So my partner and I officially get the keys to our first home in 2 weeks time :D:j:j:beer::D:j:D:D

Of course, moving out for the first time will be a shock to both of us and we know money will be tight for a while.

Could anyone help or send a link with a checklist for when we move out for things to think about... Eg. council tax, mortgage, tv license etc. I just want to make sure we have it covered.

I'm in a similar position to you. Based on all my research, here's the major things you'll need to think about:


(a) Insurance: home insurance
(b) Legal matters: council tax,
(c) Home: energy (gas + electricity), water, TV license, broadband, TV and landline phone
(d) Car (if you have one): road tax, update your driving license to show new address
(e) Finances: update all your bank accounts to show new address
(f) Free improvements: get free loft and cavity wall insulation from British Gas.


Also consider life insurance to cover off your mortgage, which is not a compulsory, but is beneficial in case something happens to one of you.

On the energy (gas + electricity): uSwitch currently have a good "collective switch" deal with E.ON. You'll likely get the best rates with them vs. other providers. The deal ends soon until someone else comes up with a "collective switch" deal later on in the year.

Finally - most important of all - go and meet your neighbours soon. You want to be on their good books in case you wish to do renovation / refurb. work. They can be a pain for you (complaining to council) if they don't like you

And if you intend to apply for post redirection I'd suggest you do so before you change your address with your bank, as applying for redirection on the internet using a bank card is much easier than taking loads of bits of paper to the Post Office.

Here's my moving check-list! Hope it helps

- Check your home insurance policy to make sure you have cover from the day you exchange contracts.

- Find cheap TV, broadband and phone deals.

- Consider a new credit card to reap the 0% interest for all the new purchases you're going to buy!

- Redirect your mail.

- Find the cheapest energy tariffs for your new home.

- Update your addresses with your TV licence, bank or building society, current credit cards, insurance providers, and any pensions etc you have.

- Cancel local deliveries and services, such as milk, magazines etc.

- Register to pay council tax for your new home

Change the locks on Day One.

Otherwise you will never know who has a key to your home - relatives of the previous owner, neighbours, dog walkers, former lodgers, workmen - any of them might have a key, and some of them will have helpfully labelled it "Front Door of 29 Acacia Avenue" before losing it in the street.
