10 month bonus accelerators

Is it a 12 month policy where you get your NCB after 10 months or is it actually just a 10 month policy?

If you go to other insurers later, they will not recognise the NCB but will work on full years.

I read something a while back that showed these 10 month plans have actually worked out more expensive than annual plans.

I had a 10 month bonus accelerator from Diamond when I first bought my car (had passed my test a year before). After 10 months, I had 1 years NCB if I continued to be insured with Diamond... but I shopped around and found Tesco were much cheaper. I rang them and explained the situation in full, the guy spoke to his manager and came back and said that they would treat my 10 months as a full year NCD, yay. After my year with Tesco, Diamond were cheaper again, so I did the 10m accelerator again, and this year I renewed and went on to the full 12m policy with 3 years no claims. (I didn't want to get to the point where I had 4 years no claims but had only been driving for 3 1/2 years!!)

So in summary... you do get a years no claims but as dunstonh said, you can only guarantee it will be treated as such if you stay with the same company the next year. If it is a good price anyway (don't forget to take into account that it is only for 10 months!), it might be worth taking the risk that you can carry it to another company. For me, Diamond or Tesco have always been the cheapest insurers and I've always had sterling customer service from them so I had no problems sticking with Diamond. With Diamond their 10m policies are always pro rata to the 12m ones I think so you aren't losing out by doing this.

Yeah - my accelerator worked, I've been claiming the full year NCB ever since (from different companies).

Very few of them actually check the NCB thoroughly - after all, if it gives you a £20 discount, it would cost them more in admin to check it out. I never specifically told anyone that part of my NCB was due to an accelerator, but equally they never asked or specified such in their Ts&Cs.

    Have I understood correctly?

I had a 10 month Admiral accelerator policy which ended in Oct 2006 when I sold my car, I didn't make a claim.

Am buying a new car now, am I only able to get a no-claims discount if I insure with Admiral?

    Correct.

Its an internal marketing thing which keeps you at that company (or sister companies) until you have built up a real no claims period in multiples of 12 months.
