Tenants in common query

Hi all,
I currently co-own a property as joint tenants with a family member. We want to sever the joint tenancy to become tenants in common and will be holding unequal shares in the property.
Can somebody please advise me whether we need to have a declaration of trust made to record the shares we hold in the property or if there is another way of going about recording the shares we hold- for example a way of notifying the Land Registry?
