Sanding walls - tips etc ?

I have most of the wallpaper off in our new house, the next stage is probably sugar soaping them to get all the sticky stuff off ?

After that I guess sanding. I bought a pole sander and will use that when the walls are clean.

What grit of sandpaper should I use? The walls are all solid, no dry walls.

Is it an old house with lime plaster (roughish, whiteish) or is it rough because of disrepair? (cracking , blistering)

Its a house from the 1960s. The plaster is a grey colour. The house had only ever had one family in it, and they wallpapered almost every room!!

I have taken it all off with a steamer carefully, no scores or anything..... just feels rough. There's the odd settlement crack in the corners which I can fill in easily.

When I rub my palm on the wall back and forth it is rough and not smooth.

I did the same thing after removing the wallpaper in our lounge. It was rough enough to need some attention but not enough to warrant a re-skim.

I found 120 grid was perfect for smoothing the surface down. It's abrasive enough to remove the lumps and bumps and provide a nice key for the paint.

    A few tips...

Go over the room 1st with a scraper to remove any serious bumps then you are ready to sand.
Seal the room you are sanding from the rest of the house and open the window.
Wear a decent face mask and goggles.
When you think you've finished sanding... a quick coat of paint will highlight all the areas you've missed and you can start all over again.

    Have fun :-)

Be prepared for the huge amounts of dust this is going to create. I have a proffesional sander that extracts the dust and even using this you still get a fair bit.
I bought this because of using a wall sanding pole and because of how much dust it was creating.

    Just so you are aware.
