Windows Media Player - Vista & XP query

Although Microsoft.com says to use version 11 on XP & Vista machines, version 9 is working fine on the XP laptop (bought in March this year), so I'd like to revert to that version on the other machines as well. Does anyone know of any compatibility/conflict issues with doing so?
I recently burned a DVD with Nero under XP made up of mpg (one file was over 2 gigs, so had to do it UDF as it couldn't be done under ISO), avi & m2v video files. I've found that they'll play in WMP 9 & 11 quite happily under XP, but under Vista the avi's will only play the music with no video & the mpgs will only show the video with no audio. I don't understand what the issue could be - the Vista machine is very new, no new software has been installed on it, & it's not yet connected to the internet so it's not been infected by anything. There aren't any conflicts in Device Manager either. I'm now wondering if the settings for the Vista version are different, as I couldn't find the usual "File Options" tab for checking & setting the file extensions.
XP on desktop - WMP version 11.0.5721.5145
XP on laptop - WMP version 9.00.00.3250
Vista on other desktop - WMP version 11.0.6000.6324
Could I remove WMP 11 from the Vista machine & install WMP 9 instead, or should I just use a different media player, such as Winamp?

I dont think WMP 9 can be installed on Vista. you'll have to use WMP 11 or choose another player.0

Many thanks - I'd forgotten about VLC. I've used it before, so I'll use it again as it will work on all the machines.
