the OP asked for a recommendation , I gave one .
So did I and so did others. The only person getting excited appears to be you.

ok I back out and suggest the OP , buys the one you suggested from ebay.

it seems that your suggestion of the "best" overrules mine

so your knowledge must be greater than mine and I bow to your superior knowledge

    good night

I bought a Edimax 150Mbps dongle (very small) when I was playing with a setup using XBMC , its one of the few dongles that work without a painfull setup on a Linux machine

its brill on windows , and on 8 (which I use now) very fast and stable , no drivers needed etc

I have found that the basic cheap ones from ebay are a bit iffy

    edimax one , http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003MTTJOY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00

Thanks Freddy. That seems like a reasonable mix of cheapness and value. I just need to buy something else to get the free postage :D

Personally i'd lift the carpets around the room and use cat5 cable, but that's just me.

The trouble with WiFi is always idiotic neighbours who turn their routers on/off everytime they use them. Eventually they end up on the same WiFi channel and I cannot be bothered with messing about with WiFi settings every day.

One of the sellers is offering free postage. If you prefer a specific recommendation then that one is still pretty cheap and we know will work well on Linux should you ever need that option.

I've just put down laminate. I had considered running cable under the skirting but it was too late. I can always go down the conduit route later if I have problems.

I went for the Edimax one for £7, and a few "really useful" boxes to make up the free shipping, so still worked out better than the Netgear from maplin :)

yup different make , a std LB link one

several here all slow/lethargic and not fit for purpose

I specifically mentioned the edimax , because it WORKS!

the non (if that's the word) geeks who use raspberry PIs and the like will not put up with crap ,

the edimax is the best and most stable dongle I have used for a long time

believe me , I am a tight git , but 5 X £1.99 , for crap or £7.99 for summot that works ? no contest

if the OP wants an LB-link unit FOC , PM me and I will put one in the post free of charge , and send them a link via PM to the drivers

    Another vote the EDImax.

I've bought several cheap ones for a couple of quid off ebay and they work with everything except my Raspberry Pi's, for those the EDImax are brilliant.

I have to say that on Linux or other machines the cheap ones have been fine. I've not noticed any sluggishness but what I have noticed is that one of them only reports a 2% signal strength even though it works at close to full speed.

I was up at CPC collecting one of the new raspberry Pis this afternoon for a friend (a lot quicker!) the edimax was about £9.00 (single) inc vat and postage

like Mr_Toad I agree they are stable , in both win and my hotchpotch openelec setup

I got my Ras Pi 2 a while ago and it's loads faster than the original, in fact for basic stuff it's more than usable. I've consigned my old one to life as controller for a robot I built :D

The new one runs my weather station and I've never seen the CPU above 12% even when it's querying the database or weather station. They are really a fantastic bit of kit.
