Agricultural Quad bikes

Can anyone shed any light on registering a used quad for agricultural use, but to be able to use it for occaisional road use, ie small holding to farm etc.

I had a quick look at the Gov site but found it very confusing and couldn't really see which forms were needed etc.

Also a brief idea of how it works, I think a bike registered as such needs lights and number plates and has to be insured. No mot or tax is needed?

Anyone any experience.

This is a genuine enquiry as we are considering the bike for such use, not just trying to avoid tax/mot etc
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

You can tax your vehicle in the limited use tax class if its used solely for purposes relating to agriculture, horticulture or forestry and:

its used on public roads only in passing between different areas of land occupied by the same person
the distance it travels on public roads in passing between any two such areas does not exceed 1.5 kilometres

If it doesn't fall under the exemptions, it's a normal road vehicle, so tax-test-mot etc.

But the quad bike dealer should be able to help you with all that.

The limited use tax class doesn't seem to provide exemption from the MOT, and insurance will definitely be required.

Thanks. Yes of course you are right but it's always best to turn up at a dealership with at least a little knowledge first.

Yes it needs insurance that's a given, but I've seen many advertised stating no need for tax or Mot.
I used to tax our company fork trucks under the limited use scheme, free, but still had to carry the disc (not so now of course)

I'll ring a few dealers to see if it's acceptable under the light farm machinery section. It would be ruled out of the other section as the road use would be between our farmland and another farm not owned by us.

Well, I've spoken to or visited 3 fairly local dealerships.

    The agricultural reg is fairly straight forward and these are the main points but there is 1 grey area;

A new bike can be registered for agricultural use, there is an extra cost for this, £55 I'm told,

Much more difficult to do this privately for a used bike, it seems that it has to be done through and official dealer, but some dealers will help with this.

Free tax is granted for AgReg quads, no mot is needed.

Lights front and rear required plus rear number plate

Must be single seater and no passengers can be carried on road

Now the grey area, the distance from registered base that the quad can be used on road. There simply doesn't seem to be a definative answer. I dealer told me his local police force allowed 7 mile rad from base. (this would easily cover our requirements and I'm in the same PA). Another told me a tale of 2 lads that bought a pair of bikes from him. These were on "farm" plates. They were caught 2 days later 70 from home at the coast, 1 idiot had been reported for riding his on the beach. Police attended but once it was clear he was insured he escaped with a rollicking.

The view of that dealer was that even the police are not clear on the subject.

Anyway just thought that might help anyone in the same situ as info is pretty unclear.

The legislation states a short distance, perhaps you can give us an idea of the distance you are talking about and why you wish to use it on a road.

Didn't read that anywhere???????, but just adds the the confusion regarding the regs doesn't it.

We own farmland, 1 don't walk well, I shoot on other farms, we want to fetch supplies from else where, all within a 7 mile (5 more like) radius, explains it all I think???

Totally aware but again, this is for a working machine that will be kept locked in a secure building when not in use.

In opposition to your answer the insurers think differently, I was quoted for TPFT and TP only, negligible difference so in their view not a major risk.

In practice it's likely to be within sight at all times when in use, also the farm access I use is electronically controlled, I have the access cade so gatres are auto closed behind.

Just trying to show that this is a workhorse not some toy for the road, it has been thought through

Your local ROST, or Rural policing team will know what is what, local area stations give conflicting advice but ask for the rural team they will know more and may pay courtesy visit to you to spot weak points in security give advice about what is road legal and what isn't what documents and cover you need and what you don't need etc and basically things that you can improve on security wise, also give you direct contact numbers for you to contact them, I used to do alot of rabbit and pigeon shooting 8-10 years ago with a club who had leased shooting rights on numerous farms around the area, some farmers had trouble with rogue hunters and criminals going over their land shooting deer and badger and fox and steeling hay and quads and dirt bike problems etc so rural officers would sometimes tag along with us to know the pathways, bridals and layout of the land that had issues with certain crimes also so they could get to know the people who had rights to be on the land and the ones that didn't.

    Ok the exemption is

    Purposes relating to agriculture.
Passing on public roads only to land occupied by the same person.
    Distance does not exceed 1.5km.

    You probably won't be exempt.
