Car hit when parked - will it affect me?

My OH parks his car down a very quiet residential road whilst he is at work. Car was parked up, stationary no one in the car, just like every other day.
The other week, he finished work to find someone had driven into the car, and drove off. Didn't leave a note or anything.
We weren't going to claim, however I'm concerned about the damage to the bumper. The scratching on it seems quite deep, the paint has completely gone from a small section, and is now black and very rough. Also the grill around the spot light seems to have vanished!
It is as though someone has drove down the road looking for a parking space, turned into this road and saw there was no space, and has then proceeded to reverse straight into the car.
If I were to put in a claim, would it go against ME and wipe out some of the NCD we have built up?
Thanks in advance.

Yes any claim that your insurer cannot get back their outlay from a liable third party is recorded as a fault claim against you ("fault" referring to the money paid out not "blame")
Assuming your NCD is not protected you will lose 2 years from any NCD you had at the start of the policy year (from a max of 5) and none will be awarded for the current year.0 -
We protected the NCD, we have 9 years (this would be the 10th year).
I haven't reported it to the insurers yet. Think I'll take the car to a garage and get it checked over for some prices before thinking about going to insurers then. Excess is only £50 anyway.0 -

All this claim will do to your NCD is use up a claim "life" - your protection will allow you to make "x" claims in "y" years (check your policy wording to see exactly)
Do dummy quotes online with and without this claim in your history to see what difference this makes to your future premium to help decide whether to claim or not.0
