Hi
I moved into a flat two weeks ago and I already hate living there - the traffic noise is unbearable (something I was aware might be a problem) but the biggest problem is that new neighbours moved into the flat next door (they have bought theirs) and as my bedroom is next to their living room I can hear absolutely everything - conversations, music, tv, dog barking, etc.
This is the first time I've lived on my own and I'm not sure what to do. I'm quite content on my own but I just can't bear being in that flat. I know many will say wait and see if it all improves but I just want out now. I've had previous awful experiences with horrible neighbours which doesn't help.
I have signed a shorthold 6 month agreement with a private landlord. There was no deposit - instead I paid a month's rent in advance. In cash. I do have a written receipt.
There's no break-clause in my lease so I realise this may just end with me having to pay the full term (I'm that desperate to leave that I'm willing to do so).
What's the best way of going about this? I suffer with anxiety so making a phone call is not something I'm comfortable with. I want to write a letter (so I have records) but I'm not sure how to go about it.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Start by talking to the landlord. Invite him to tea and have cake on offer.
An Early Surrender of the tenancy is entirely up to goodwill - you have no legal right, so whether he agrees, and on what terms (he may want compensation for his extra costs) is up to him. Discussions are best done face to face.
Once you reach an agreement, get it confirmed in writing.0 -
All you can do other than wait out the 6 months is ask the landlord if he would release you from the contract. If there is no break clause he can refuse.0

In the meantime could you turn your sitting room into your bedroom and your bedroom into your sitting room.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Good thinking!
If you do move, you need to think about how you will make sure you are not jumping from the frying pan to the fire. What can you do to stop this happening wherever you go next?0 -
Or you could do what I do.., wear headphones while listening to your TV, white noise, soothing music, whatever helps.
It could save you a few grand.
You say you can hear noise.., this does not necessarily mean you have a repeat of the past (bad neighbours). You may just live in a place with thin walls.
Of course, you can decide to leave the flat whatever it costs you, its your choice, but it does sound like possibly coping skills could be worked on first. No criticism at all intended. But perhaps I am more focused on not spending money I don't absolutely have to than some!0 -
Thanks for the advice! I had a long think over the weekend and I've decided to stick it out for the full term.
I had thought about moving the bed to the living room. Might be something to consider if it really does become unbearable!SwagBucks since 25/5/15 - £70 Amazon0
