FTB utilities help

Hi all,
We've just exchanged and are completing soon. Bit confused with bills etc. We've been told by our solicitor that we should get in contact with the vendors current utility providers to let them know we will be moving in on the date given and taking over the bills
Do first time buyers have to do this? I understand calling your existing energy company and telling them your moving, but we wanted to use comparison sits to get a good deal as we've been living at home.
Any advise for an over worrying FTB?
Thanks

Its normal to give the old owners suppliers a call with meter readings on date you moved in just dont let them lock you into a contrac,t then once bills in your name you can switch. If nothing else it means you wont get hassled over any unpaid bills the old owners may have0

It can take a few weeks for your energy company to change over, during which time you are liable for the usage on the old supplier. To ensure you aren't over charged you need to call them and give them your name and a meter reading and the date you moved in. Otherwise they could try and charge you for usage which isn't yours.0

You're stuck with the current suppliers when you move in - but can change as soon as you want. As has been said - first thing to do when you arrive at the house is to take meter readings for gas, electric and water. Just take photos of the meters with your phone. Then ring up as soon as you can - it doesn't have to be the same day.0

Just be careful
We were stuck with first utility whom put us on standard tariff when I rung up which turned out to be 22 p per unit for electric which is double what I previously paid. Our switch to best deal took - month and the final bill from FU was £280.
The lesson here is to opt for the best tariffs the present supplier offers then look to move away0
