Clear glass splashback in kitchen - bad idea?

Hi,

I was all set on getting a clear splashback to show off a feature wall in the kitchen. This would go behind the hob and the sink.

I called up a company that specialise in this stuff, and they basically said, 'You don't want to do that'. They asked how you would stop spiders, dust, condensation etc from getting behind it.

I'm not 100% married to the idea of clear but don't want to take one man's opinion without challenge.

Has anybody got any experience of this. Is it indeed a bad idea? I would have thought silicone might do the trick but it would be seen through the glass i guess?

Help me!

Honestly, I agree with them. It sounds like a bad idea. Condensation or dirt behind it would look dreadful and be impossible to clean, and also the grease that collects on it would look horrible - you'd be permanently cleaning it.

I had it once, never again! I was forever wiping it and it would look ok then from another angle it was streaky, and always had a film on it. Bits used to get down the back of it, and don't get me started on the problems with the one at the back of the cooker. It was an absolute nightmare.
It looked lovely when new but the effect was completely ruined after using the kitchen.Much better options out there.

Thanks for this, looks like I'll be avoiding this just in the nick of time.

Can anybody suggest an alternative. Colour matched glass splashback. Perhaps no splashback? Or quartz to match our worktops? Or something else?
