How long does a shop have to take their money?

I bought petrol over 1 week ago on Weds 6th May and used the 'pay at pump' function. £1 was held from my debit account (as it normal at the Tesco I use). They normally take the full amount a few days later, but they haven't so far and the £1 held against the account has gone from my pending transactions. This has never happened before.

My question is how long do they have to take their money?

As an aside, I shopped in the same TESCO store last night and this isn't showing in my pending transactions either. However, other transaction in other stores are. Confused!

The timescales will be determined by the retailer's merchant agreement. It's likely to be only 3-7 days, but they do have up to 180 days...providing your bank (or you, yourself via your bank) doesn't chargeback due to 'late presentment'.

I've had one or two myself over the years (but none in recent times), but none have ever run past 7 days.

I've had this with Tesco also, Aldi is another one where it does not show as pending. Best advice is if you are on a strict budget to pay in cash, or use a secondary bank account with debit card for shopping etc and check your transactions before you spend each time.

I find Morrisons is the worst for this.

Our local Lidls is bad - had one transaction which took ~ 10 days to appear.

6 months to take the money without informing you, 6 years to demand the money from you.
