Tax credits application problem

I have recently had our second child and given up work which means we are now eligible for tax credits. I have received the form but it is asking for our income for the last financial year and if I give this information we won't get anything as I was working then. I need to know how I give the figures for the forthcoming year. There is a box for estimated earnings but it is only for the time since the financial year started which is pointless when we're only about 6 weeks in. I have tried ringing the tax office a few times for advice but been on hold for about an hour each time then get cut off! Please help.
