Renting and credit check

We will soon be looking for a place to rent but I am worried that bad credit reports might make it difficult.

Does anyone know from personal experience ( not just guessing please) how in depth the check is? I have been told by some people they only check the basics - your ID and if you are bankrupt or have CCJ's.

I don't have CCJ's and am not bankrupt but have mortgage arrears and quite a few debts. I don't want to sell my house only to find I can't rent anywhere!

How hard is it these days?

Many thanks

  • Well, you've answered your own question - they only check for information that is available to the public. Your mortgage situation isn't in the public domain.

Will mortgage arrears not show up on a credit check? My mortgage lender said being in arrears can negatively impact my credit rating. On a plus side - although I am in arrears I have paid on time and in full for quite a while now.

Landlord checks only bring up public information such as whether you've had CCJ's, or been bankrupt.

They can't see an in-depth credit check. They can't see how many debts you have or how much in arrears you are with any mortgages etc.
