My electric meter is in the cupboard under the stairs. The gas meter is outside but when I had gas installed I actually got asked where I wanted it e.g inside, outside, box in the ground.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

people ignore the fact that the meter needs to be moved due to the cost.
Not allowed to build over a plastic service. If you did and national grid found out, they have the power to disconnect your gas supply and charge you for a new supply.0 -
Theres hundreds of thousands had extensions leaving the meters in situ.whats the problem ? H and S gone mad as usual. Most common to have a conservatory extending with the original meters left where they are, including boxes. With grossly extortionate prices charged by DNO and N Grid for a move , can you blame people. Can be £1500 or more for both meters0

Meterman is right. You are not allowed to build over a gas supply pipe full stop. Its been like that since previous accidents where the weight of floors/buildings have crushed the plastic/metal pipe carrying the gas. Whether you think its HSE has gone mad sacsquacco is beside the point.0

My understanding is the gas pipe can't run under the building so you could have it inside but the pipe would come through the wall. If you build over the gas pipe expect issues in the future as previously mentioned.
Has that always been the case? I've seen properties with gas meters inside where the gas network main comes into the property and runs under the floorboards to the meter. Probably installed in the 1980s.
I suppose the law you are referring too applies to modern eurobox houses with concrete floors and cardboard internal walls.sacsquacco wrote: »Theres hundreds of thousands had extensions leaving the meters in situ.whats the problem ? Just get a dodgy builder like my neighbour got, they just disconnected the meter themselves, dug up the pipe, shortened it, and re-positioned the meter onto the side of the new extension.0 -

H and s gone mad? What's the worst that could happen? House burns down, house explodes? People killed?0 -

One in 50million, where do you get that figure from?is it made up?
So you would advocate letting any builder build over or move a service?0
