Car Tax Fine

I was late in renewing my car tax in January, my own fault really I know, but basically in April last year I moved house, I sent in the section of my Logbook to inform them of this, never thinking anything of it, however about 3 weeks ago I received a penalty letter at my new house from a debt collection agency who had traced me, at this point I realized I never actually received a new logbook in the post.
So I went up to my old house to ask for Mail, and there were all my reminders and then notices of the fine etc.
I was wondering if I explained this to them would I have any chance of getting away with not paying the £80 fine as I'd much rather not have to pay it obviously haha, I know I should remember to tax my car but at the same time, surely they should have updated my address?
Also I know this doesn't really make any difference, but the tax on my car is £0 a year.
Thanks in advance
