The Travelodge in Covent Garden is close and although you probably won't get it very cheap now it may well be cheaper than a lot of other hotels in that area.

not a hotel but if you haven't already booked your theatre tickets, kidsweek booking period starts in June (for shows from 1st - 31st August)

That's very good value, but not really the walking distance to the Cambridge and Theatre Royal that the OP's looking for - the Covent Garden Travelodge is a much better location for their needs.

As it's the summer, another option could be student accomodation - the LSE have rooms in High hoburn (almost next to the Travelodge) that the rent out in the summer when the students are off.

Not hot on which theatre is showing what, and where they're located. 20 min walk to Leicester Square, and most theatres close to that, was my thinking. :D

The Cambridge (showing Matilda) is off Seven dials, and C&TCF is at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. I agree that it's not an impossible walk, but with a young child after a show somewhere closer might be preferable.

thank you for the info. I have only ever been to London once for the day and never to the theatre there so any information is very helpful.

Premier Inn have hotels at Leceister Square and Covent Garden so both a short walk to the Theatre. If a similar price to the Covent Garden Travelodge, it is usually superior accomodation to the TL. Kids also eat the breakfast for free with each paying adult so worth booking that (also applies to TL).

The kids week offers are really good, but you have to book quickly when it starts, as the more popular shows sell out very quickly.

Secret Escapes are good for central 4* and 5* hotels at very good prices. Right now they have the Lancaster hotel (4* near Oxford Circus) from £139 per room per night, including breakfast. They change their sales all the time so it is worth keeping an eye on. My referral link is on the referrers board and will get you £15 free credit for your first purchase over £100.
