Cheap batteries and smoke detectors.
They don't go together.
Three days and it's chirping away.
The last batteries were Duracell and they lasted 18 months.

Yes, I always find the best things to skimp on are products that could potentially save your life.
Brb, off to buy a defibrilator from eBay. Chinese seller, of course.0 -
So far its taken you 3 days to think about getting better batteries ???This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

OP - are you SURE your house isn't on fire?! Check behind the sofa too, just to be sure.
If you want Duracell/other premium quality batteries then be prepared to pay Duracell/other premium quality prices. Crapola 12 for £1 are unlikely to be the most reliable...
If you GENUINELY cannot afford sensible batteries (Sainsbury's own brand in mine, no problems to date - AND I read by candlelight at night), speak to your local fire service. Trust me; they'd much rather give you a couple of batteries than have to haul what's left of you and your family out of the shell of your burnt-out house.0 -
I generally go for supermarket own-brand batteries. Not quite as long lasting as the big brand names, but significantly cheaper. Market stall batteries, on the other hand, are a complete unknown and may not work properly at all.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
I got a free smoke alarm via the fire brigade 10 year battery.0

My house is (new) hard-wired.... but they still have batteries in them ...and the s0ddin first one started beeping....I put up with it 4 days or so before I HAD to do something about it. Being hard-wired, I'd not expected batteries too - and when you try to take it off the ceiling ... it's (scarily) hard-wired.
So, having thought about it for some days, tried to work out how to loosen it, tried to work out how to do the changeover on this model, got the ladder ready, realised you have to turn the power off etc etc .... I was lucky enough to get a neighbour give me a hand (he could get it off the ceiling, I could get it back on).
Lovely .... silence....for another 2 weeks until the next one kicked off.
Not sure how they expect grannies to be doing this up ladders!0 -
Look at the technology, not the brand. Tests show that any brand alkaline lasts about four times longer than any brand zinc carbon. Lithium last longer still.

Even better, go for Low Self Discharge (LSD) Ni-Mh rechargeable batteries with good capacity.0 -

Check the use by date too, as batteries lose power over time so the ones on market stalls may be much older than ones in shops.
The cheapest places to buy batteries are Wilkinsons (own brand alkaline) or Poundland (Kodak alkaline).0
