So much incorrect information...

Hi All

I'm a first-time user and before I get my rant on I want to explain my circumstances... in 2009 I was self-employed and all was good, I'd recently got a mortgage and my Wife and I were expecting our first child. Before the little bloke was born I was forced into bankruptcy thanks to two companies going bust on me to the tune of £40k - That's the abridged version, the long version isn't all that interesting but there you go, in essence, i went bust in 2009 and have been treading water ever since. I was discharged automatically in 2010 and had no payment orders etc. it was all over and done with.

My 6yrs is up now so I thought I'd see what information is held about me. I've been able to open a mainstream current account with Natwest and have another account with First Direct so it can't be a total disaster, right?

I signed up with CreditExpert and, initially found the information they held was incomplete, i then updated my address history and waited for the update which came this morning - and then i saw it - every-single-peice of information relating to my creditors is incorrect. We're talking incorrect balances, incorrect default dates, incorrect (mostly missing) settlement dates, one lender claims a partial settlement was reached via a voluntary agreement in 2014 and so on... it's ridiculous!

Given how important a person's credit history is these days, don't these companies have some kind of legal (or moral?) obligation to enter correct info? I've now got to start chasing down each entry in an effort to get my file cleaned up correctly, I'll be phoning Experian shortly in the hopes that they can help but I expect it's going to boil down to me writing many letters, paying for recorded delivey and waiting months for these people to do what they should have done years ago.

I have no point, i'm annoyed, GAH!

Make sure you also check your credit files with the other 2 agencies (equifax and callcredit). You don't need to sign up for the premium services, you can just get a £2 statutory report from equifax and get your callcredit report free from noddle.

Probably worth a read of this on getting your credit files corrected after bankruptcy - Credit Reference File Clean Up Post Bankruptcy

  • Thank you, and thanks for the link too, I've already read that, found it whilst rummaging earlier today.

I've now spoken to CreditExpert twice. I called them this morning but was unconvinced that they were actually doing anything, the woman on the phone really didn't care less so I called them back a few minutes ago and they've said that they're contacting all of my former creditors who have posted incorrect default dates etc. and are asking them to revise the dates - whether they will or not remains to be seen, but it's a start.

I've now got to find a copy of the bankruptcy order and i think i'll need a certificate of discharge too. No idea where to get either of them but I'll start with the Insolvency Service and will go from there. Joy!

...it's a lot of fuss considering i don't actually want to apply for credit!

You get it from the court, costs around £70, a letter from the insolvency might work, worked for me, save you £70, they give those for free.

    Hi LeicesterTiger,

I understand that you didn't have a good experience when you first called us and am sorry to hear this.

When we are made aware that information on a report is wrong we will contact the lenders for you and mark the entries as disputed.

You should get an email from us shortly letting you know when we've done this.

As we get replies from the lenders we will contact you to let you know what they have said.

The default dates on the accounts should be the same or earlier than your bankruptcy date, as this is over six years the accounts should come off your report as they are updated.

It will still be worth getting a copy of your confirmation of bankruptcy and discharge as lenders will sometimes ask for these before updating their information.

Our Ask James page covers rebuilding your credit rating after bankruptcy here which you may find useful.

    Kind regards
    Neil
