Harrogate or York and what to do?

Its going to be our 20th wedding anniversary in June and we'd like to do something special. We can't go away overnight as we have no one to look after the children. However, we do have family who could collect them from school and look after them till bedtime.
My husband suggested either Harrogate or York (we live near Durham). Thing is, I spend a lot of time in shops as part of my job, so a day shopping is not really for me.
It would be good to have somewhere special for lunch / evening meal, but what do we do with the rest of they day? Anyone any ideas for something a bit different, something which would be memorable.
My husband does such a lot for me, so I'd like to make the day really special for him.
Thanks, Mandy.

York-much more to do than Harrogate and much easier on the train from Durham (no changes)
What kind of food do you like?June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -
I wouldn't dream of spending the day shopping for a special day out - there's so much to do in York you wouldn't have time anyway.

Won't you have to leave too early for dinner if you have to be back by the children's bed time?0 -

My kids aren't tiny. They are 17, 14 and 10. The 17 year old will put the 10 year old to bed. He does babysit sometimes. My parents will collect them from school, but are elderly and struggle with the noise, so can only cope for a few hours. So we don't have to be back really early. Probably get back for around 10pm
My husband works from home, so I think he likes the idea of shopping! We often joke that I'm the man and he's the woman!
DH is fussy, but can usually find something. We both like Indian / Italian / fish. Was thinking of Bettys for lunch.0 -

Still rather early for dinner if you've got to drive a couple of hours afterwards.
Betty's is quite fun but not really the sort of place for a celebratory lunch. This place is really good and gets super reviews on Trip Advisor.

Hi,
I ended up booking a Segway at Dalby Forest. We then had lunch before hiring some bikes and doing a couple of the bike trails (and I managed to fall off, so a nice big bruise on my leg).
On the way home, we stopped at Whitby and found a lovely fish restaurant. We got home around 10pm and our eldest had put the youngest to bed. So all was sorted. It was a great day. :T
Thanks for all your suggestions.0
