Getting debt letters for previous occupants

Hi,

We bought our house over a year ago and have recently had more and more mail coming through for the previous owners. I have marked it as no longer at this address and sent it back but they keep coming. I was getting quite fed up with them so opened one and it is a debt collector threatening legal action.

Should I do anything about this or continue to return to sender? Previous owners have emigrated so don't think they will be able to hunt them down.

We see dozens of threads on here of people who have brought trouble upon themselves by opening other peoples mail and start acting on the contents.
Put them in the bin, first you reply to and they will be all over you with harassment.

I did what you suggested (contacted companies, said previous occupants had left and that I didn't know where they were) and it worked - no more post.

Just to give the other side of the story.
