I am so worried can any one point me in correct direction

A friend of mine has recently been through cancer treatment and chemotherapy. Luckily looks like caught it in time. However six months after his chem treatment his mobility has deteriorated drastically I am now popping around to make his meals do his cleaning shopping etc. He can barely go to the corner shop now takes about 20 minutes for a 2 minute journey and heavily reliant on his walking stick.

I have got him to see his GP and to be honest nothing much has happened just more or less saying unsure what he can do and why its happening. I just want him to get the help he needs and any benefits he maybe entitled too but what do I do to help and what do i need to push GP or other organisations with about his mobility issues.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

In principle, if his disability has lasted 3 months, and is likely to last another 9, he could apply for PIP - personal independance payment.

His GP needs to make a referral - maybe for physio. Chemotherapy caused arthritis in me. I'm 6 months on from my treatment now and have had physiotherapy to build up the muscles again around the joints. I could barely walk much at all 6 months ago, but have improved slowly. Your friend should try and do a short walk daily to start with. The less you do - the less you will be able to do. Painkillers can be prescribed too. If I don't walk much for a few days it sets me back again.
  • He can make a self referral to your local integrated therapies team. They cover occupational therapy and physio in his own home.

His doctor can refer him, but often a self referral is faster.

You might find it helpful to contact his local Social Services team, contactable via the local Council office.
