Dead laptop, advice needed .....

Folks

Looking for a bit of advise on this...
Last month I accidentally plugged the power connector for my laptop into the USB port by mistake (i know, but the ports are only 5mm apart!) and have now blown the mainboard/motherboard.

I have had a few quotes from local laptop repair companies, but they are looking for anywhere between £200 and £350.

I am now considering asking if my contents insurance will cover me for this.

Before I do this, can anyone please advise on how I can get my hands on a cheap fujitsu-siemens Amilo Pro V2045? or at least the mainboard.

Looking forward to the numerous responses.......;)

Rgds

a new laptop might be cheaper.

how did you manage to plug a power supply into usb, the ports are usually very different
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

There was a damaged USB connector with the bare connectors showing (plastic end broke off ages ago) and think the 14v dc against a 5v DC input probably killed it

Was wondering that myself, only thing I could see easily touching would be the outside shield/ground of the plugs but since they're ground (I think) for both the power jack and the usb that wouldn't do anything. So unless it was really forced in....

Ignore my earlier post then, very unfortunate. I can see how that could have damaged quite a lot.

I agree with the idea of just buying a new laptop.

£300+ will buy you something very usable, particularly if you keep an eye out on the 'quick grabbit' board for a deal.

Put your own on ebay with 'spares or repair' in the title.

Put in the description that it wont start up and *may* need a new board, hence sold for spares / repairs only.

You would be surprised how much it will make...

dont tell ur insurance u have done that.

    throw some beer on it.

"i came in late 1 nite knocked a beer on it"

u will need a techincal report for the insurnace company telling u its !!!!!!d. then u can claim

also for the sake of £300 -£400 u can get ur self a decent laptop these days.

because claiming will push up ur insurance cost.

    Slightly off topic, but

You may want to practice on one of these so it does not happen again.:rotfl:
