That was the original concept of National Insurance. As invented by Mr Lloyd George; everybody paid into it, everybody could draw on it, which is why he decided to call it 'National Insurance'. It was supposed to be a fund, based on proper actuarial principles, that levied compulsory charges on workers, in order to fund claims, just like a private sector insurance company.0 -
Of course the less money given to people that don't really need it, the more is available for those that do.
People that claim a 'bad back' (I have a stenosis in my back so know what bad back is) or 'depressions' (there is depression in my family and people that use very limited resources from the mental health pool to dodge work are scum IMHO) just to claim a few hundred quid a week that they could easily earn for themselves should be ashamed.0 -
Cuts (its the word that creates fear in a few ) should be focused on driving efficiency and effectiveness of ALL public sector (including NHS):-
how many nhs executives are being paid 'on garden leave' or have got 5 year salary protection & moved to a pseudo-job
Performance management
Clear objectives and targets reviewed monthly with SMART action points and consequences for not performing/delivering
All understand the COSTS and ensure waste is reduced, eliminated.
£ as a measure not FTE/WTE/, as the unexpected (well not that unexpected) consequence of FTE is overtime ! (more cost reduced efficiency)
Poor management and performance management of projects, EU funding and NEW money. They get the £ and forget that they have to monitor, manage and take action to make it effectively used.
Not focusing on customers
System approach rather than silo (Queues of Ambulance waiting outside A&E + A&E swamped + bed blocking + poor management transfer of ''well patients'' into community = CRAP leadership and focus and management by social services(do they know what their inaction and poor systems creates?)
Risk adverse, risk avoidance cultureDebt is a symptom, solve the problem.0 -
I got your point :-) and agree.
However I'm sure your wife had to attend some interviews and show some evidence of job seeking.
Perhaps this small benefit is meant to be both carrot and stick?
Yes she had to prove that she was actively looking for work, she would have been looking anyway, but I see your point, that it is tied to attempting to find work. As it was she went back to work for a previous employer.
I've just realised though, I missed off something important from my earlier post, which was that she had received the equivalent of one year's salary as redundancy, this is why we were surprised that she (and her other colleagues) were entitled to JSA.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

I still think that it is crazy to pay JSA for 6 months to someone that has been paid the equivalent of one year's salary as redundancy. Things like JSA, child benefit, winter fuel allowance and free transport should be linked to 'need' rather than given out automatically.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
Thought this was interesting:-If the US economy is signalling an iceberg, bad news: we're out of lifeboatsTo change the metaphor, the arsenal is bare: “Whereas previous recoveries have enabled monetary and fiscal policymakers to replenish their ammunition, this recovery – both in the US and elsewhere – has been distinguished by a persistent ammunitions shortage,” says King. “This is a major problem.”But King’s basic point seems unarguable: “We may not know what will cause the next downswing but, at this stage, we can categorically state that, in the event we hit an iceberg, there aren’t enough lifeboats to go around.”
