Maybe I shouldn't post this........I don't know. I will remove it immediately if anyone wants me too.
There has been lots of research around people who have survived suicide attempts. Almost at the very point of no return, many have changed their minds eg those jumping from bridges who have survived. One of the factors in the higher suicide rates amongst males versus females is the method chosen by men often means there's no going back even if they have changed their mind, no time to make a phone call, it is often very quick and leaves no room for error.
What this research indicates is that the decision can be on a knive edge....excuse the pun:o..........and an intervention at any point can save a life.
It can help to look for an "invitation".......putting ones affairs in order, questioning a throwaway phrase such as "I can't go on like this" etc. I don't believe there's anything wrong with asking "the suicide question". It provides an opportunity to open a conversation, to ask if someone not only has the motivation but the means, then disabling their plan and seeking professional help.
It a also worth remembering that people are not at their highest risk when they are in the depths of depression. At that point they have neither the energy nor the clear thinking needed to hatch a plan. It is when they are coming out the other side, when they are starting to feel better that they are most at risk.
I'm so sorry if this is dark and I didn't really want to post around 8 o clock....poor timing on my behalf.:o I will go now and pour myself a drink and join you all.
I just wanted to say that with vigilance we can save lives:A
