Are MOT records centralised? Can one tester check previous tests?
I have a car that I'm 90% sure will pass its MOT cleanly and there's a garage close to work that's offering them £27. Obviously them bring down the price of an MOT so they can generate extra work for themselves.
I can also go to an MOT-only test centre (or a council one) for £55 and have the test done properly but for an extra £30.
I'm considering trying the cheapo one, but if they were to find a fail then also taking it over to an MOT-only centre as I trust them more and it's in their interest to test cars properly.
Obviously if £27 matey finds an issue, I'll end up paying £27+£55, but if they don't then I've saved myself £30.
Mu question is this; Assuming £27-guy fails it for whatever reason, will £55-guy be able to look up my MOT history and find a fail on it from 2 days ago?

Of course MOT records are centralised, but if you want an MOT done properly, avoid the chancers at council centres who are only there because they aren't good enough to earn commercial rates in a commercial operation.0

nice one and i agree
a local independant trusted garage is the way to go but obviously you use them for serviceing as well as the mot OP or get your legs broke by the brotherhood
ok its late i appologise:D0 -
totally disagree with that statement!
the councils set up there in house garage and workshops to service , for some many thousands of vehicles , all the mechanics are fully trained . because of the sheer quantity of vehicles VOSA (or years ago the ministry of transport allowed then to do "in house" MOTs .
those stations are monitored as strictly as any other garage that offers this service.
the council garages and MOT centres are not set up to do work for non council vehicles.
as an extra sorce of income , and to fill in gaps between council vehicles , they offer the MOT service to J Public, but as before , they cannot do repairs.
calling a fully skilled mechanic from a council garage/MOT station "chancers" is far from the truth.0 -
I'm not sure if the MOT history comes up on the MOT testers screen, but maybe an MOT tester can confirm?
There is nothing to stop the tester putting your car details and MOT test number into the public online site and taking a look for himself the same way you would at home.0 -

he won't find anything if you don't give him the failed test number0 -

You're blinkered negative view of MOT testers could lead you into a situation whereby the "cheapo" tester finds a genuine fail, you don't believe him, take your vehicle to the council test centre where the same fail is identified. This would lead you to paying for two tests, a repair and even a retest fee.0

there is no incentive by the council to fail a vehicle , unlike the majority of garages , that offer a cut price MOT in the hope of fishing in another customer.
if the car is fit to pass it will , if its faulty , you won't be offered a chance (sorry held at ransom) for the work to be done.
however the choice is down to the individual ,0 -

would you ?
this myth has been perpetuated for too long and needs killing
a proper decent independant mot garage that comes with recommended local reputation is worth more than kidding a kidder
ask yourself this
what is an mot
think carefully0
