PCN for parking on single yellow line

I received a PCN for parking on a single yellow line during the restricted hours.
This happened in Manchester. When I had parked up, I looked for any possible signs which would state what the restricted hours were. I saw a sign on the opposite side of the road where I had parked (directly opposite). The sign stated no parking on Mon-Fri 8am-6pm and Saturday 8am - 12pm.
It was a Saturday and it was 1pm, so I obviously assumed it would be OK to park there. However when I arrived back to my car an hour later, I found that I had been ticketed.
I didn't bother reading the note on the ticket as I was surprised and adamant a mistake had been made. As soon as I got home I logged on to the council website where I was able to view images of the alleged contravention. There was a photo of a sign which stated no parking on Saturday 8am-6pm.
I was puzzled by this, so I fired up Google Street Maps and found that indeed that sign did exist but further down the road (on the same side of the road where I had parked). It was not immediately visible from where I had parked.
I put in a claim stating that the sign should have been situated closer to where I had parked up in order to avoid confusion, especially as there was a sign on the opposite side of the road. I had believed that particular sign served the entire road.
Unfortunately my appeal has been rejected by the council and the PCN remains. The charge is £70, or £35 if paid within 14 days.
This was not a deliberate act, I firmly believed I had followed the rules. That said, do I stand any chance if I was to formally challenge the PCN?

frankly, I cannot understand why you would think its ok to park on a single yellow line, or any lines for that matter (unless you have a blue badge)
any restricted parking is likely to be on the side with NO yellow lines
in any case, pepipoo forums deal with council tickets so I suggest you go and post the info on there, with pictures of the sign s and scans of the redacted pcn too (the council ticket experts are over there)0
