Rent hasn't been taken but my tenancy has already ended?

Hi! Thanks for reading this.
At the start of my tenancy I signed a standing order which didn't go through, and when my first payment arrived I filled in a card payment authorisation form. At the second payment, nothing happened again, and as such I filled in another card payment form. The first two payments went out, however, my third and final payment was due to go out at the start of last mont, yet it didn't. My tenancy has just ended, so the contract has now ended. What are my legal obligations in paying this money? With me technically not being under contract anymore, I'm not sure where I stand.
Thanks!

  • If you received the service, as agreed, you are legally obliged to pay for it. Rent arrears don't just vanish when a tenancy ends.

Since your LL is also 'technically no longer under contract', you won't mind if your deposit is not returned either then?

It is your responsibility to "pay" rent. It doesn't get "taken".

Did you send the standing order mandate to your bank? Not that it really matters, you lived there, there was a contract in place, you owe the rent, so pay up before your former landlord takes you to court.
