I would agree it's probably the most common type yes, later BMWs with electrically controlled EGR valves also feed directly into the inlet manifold. See N57 and n47 engine leyout. Essentially doing the exact same job just set up slightly different

Even if they recirculate directly into the inlet they still need a device to adjust the amount of flow. It maybe an EGR or some other device that does a similar job.

To go back to the original question asked about a leak of dirty black oil -

Fred246 hasn't come back to us yet, but I reckon all he needs is a new gasket between the EGR and the inlet manifold.

Or a new flexible rubber turbo-pipe - they split with age.

Or simply check/tighten the jubilee clip type of thing.

One of the above is 90% sure to fix the sticky oily leak.

Try the cheap fixes first before replacing the expensive EGR itself.
