Integrated washing machine.

I am in the process of having a new kitchen installed to include an integrated washing machine. I assumed that I would be able to use my existing free standing washing machine. Am I correct? Thanks.

I'm not really sure what you mean. Do you mean you thought you could use your existing free-standing machine, and get it integrated into a new cupboard? If this is what you thought, the answer is no.

Integrated machines and free-standing machines are different. A free-standing machine will not fit into a cupboard. If you want an integrated machine, you will need to buy one that is integrated.

Hi there, thank you for your reply. When ordering the kitchen it includes and integrated cupboard for the washing machine. I was not brought to my attention that I could not use my existing washing machine. Is there no way around the solution as my machine is igood working order?

    In a word: No.

Integrated machines do not usually go in a cupboard, they fit in a 600mm space between 2 cupboards and the door to hide them fits onto the machine.

This space would accept a free-standing machine in width, the problem is with the depth of the machine. Integrated models are much smaller back to front as they have to fit behind the door line.

You could buy the door that you need, put it away in the loft, and use your present machine meantime. Then when you need a new one you buy an integrated one.

This however will mean you have to live with the W/M sticking out and spoiling the look of your kitchen.

If the machine will be sited next to a corner, the adjacent door will not open properly.
  • Mine is behind a matching cupboard door and the door of the cupboard is definitely not fixed to the machine. So yes it's possible but you need to be very careful measuring up otherwise it may well not fit into the standard 600mm cupboard.
It must fit behind the kickboard at the bottom..
Just measure it and if it won't fit then you need to think again and decide which is more important: using your existing machine or having a flush looking integrated kitchen.
Edited: Mine is next to a corner and the door opens properly.

A proper integrated machine will fit behind a 60cm wide door and under a 60cm deep worktop. A regular freestanding machine will normally fit in a 60cm wide gap but stick out slightly when under a 60cm deep worktop so you you won't be able to put a door in front of it. To put a door in front of it the worktop needs to be at least 70cm deep (and the units either side need to be brought forward too) and the gap at least 65cm wide so the machine can fit past the doors hinges. In fact you would need a gap of nearly 70cm once you've put in a panel each side, one to hinge the door off and another for it to close against (these are normally nearly 2cm wide)
