New TV problems

My old TV died last week - it was 10 years old - so I have replaced it with a flat screen HD ready TV. The new TV is connected to my Sky digibox through a SCART lead. Despite fiddling with picture setting on both Sky and the TV the picture is always a bit "squashed". Setting ratio to 16:9 on both TV and Sky output helped a bit. Only advice I got from Sky was buy a new SCART lead - which I did - which made no difference. Rang the manufacturer of TV who insist TV is fine. Am I right in thinking the TV needs an HDMI lead in order to display correctly? If that's true, I can't connect an HDMI to a digibox. Any advice please? Thanks
