I bought a red Ford transit T260 yesterday, 55000 milage and 4 months warrenty for £4995. When we went for a test drive, I couldn't feel anything wrong with it except the smell of disel. When I questioned the dealer about it, he said that its because itd been sitting there for about a week. I hope thats true, otherwise what could be the problem? I hope nothing too serious.

Sitting for a week shouldn't make it smell of fuel. Fuel leaking somewhere will make it smell of fuel.

If it gets stronger when driving (or when coming to a stop after driving) then it usually means that it's being pumped out - bad for your wallet, bad for the environment, and very bad for any motorcyclists who happen to come along after you.

Open the bonnet and look carefully for wet patches around the fuel pipes, pump, injectors etc. Then start the engine and see if any appear while it's running. Any leaks, get the seller to sort out while the sale is still "fresh".

Check the connections near the fuel filter.

Though it ia more likely to be one if the leak off pipes.

Get it checked before you kill a motorcyclist.

It could be anything from a loose connection to a leaking tank. Get a torch and look everywhere. If the smell continues get a garage to check it if the dealer fails to asses it properly.

Assuming they don't kill themselves first with the way they ride them.

At least around my area anyway. :p

(It does bear a more serious point though op - have it looked it, could be something that needs sorting. That or the engines running very rich.)

old 1990s cars used to smell of fuel immediately after fillup, but the modern cars should not smell of fuel at all.

Smell of diesel and you still bought it without getting it inspected?
