Service charge
We pay £14.50 monthly to British Gas for a service charge on our boiler. They now want £ 16 monthly. Is it really worth it or should I just put the money away and hope nothing major goes wrong.

Does that include the annual service.
As they cost about £60 including VAT.
How old is the boiler?
How many times have you called them out?
Do you have emergency savings. If not then start as this is the sort of things that you should be paying out of. As well as washing machine etc.

The boiler was fitted when the house was new 4 years ago. They dont service it as such but the payment is to fix if it breaks down otherwise they dont come out.
We took cover out when we moved in a year ago as the boiler was acting a bit odd and within a couple of months they did have to come and put in a new pump and a new ignition solonoid <sp>
I dont have any other maintenance or service agreements so would have to use savings for anything that goes wrong.
Just wondered do they go wrong on average a lot.Living the dream and retired in Cyprus :j

There have been many threads on this subject which you could read and the question you ask has been covered at length:

I think the consensus of opinion is that ‘Mr Average’ would probably save money by not having this service cover; but those who have the cover treat it as insurance.
Personally, for the peace of mind it gives me, I believe it is money well spent.
Incidentally I pay the same as you for the 3* cover and I get an annual service included - as do all of the others who posted in the above threads I believe.0 -
Thanks for posting the links I will read and decide what to do. I will also check out whether they actually come and physcally do a service as you have me thinking now.

Well, they don't service mine any more. Just an annual inspection, emissions etc, but don't even take the case off and haven't the last 2 visits. But I still consider it well worth the peace of mind.0
