A&L free travel insurance cover with Premier Account

I have just found out that A&L include free travel insurance with their Premier Accounts. I'm sure it wasn't advertised when I opened the account. Saves me buying seperate insurance. The details look ok too. Enough cover for what we need and excess don't seem too bad either.

Anyone had experience of these? It's not clear whether it is cover forever or maybe only the first year. Anyone know before I call them?

As it's one of the benefits of the account, then usually these benefits are available as long as you are subscribing to that account option.

Obviously you should be sure it's in place when you make any bookings but these days you will usually need to prove to companies that you have your own insurance.

We have found the travel insurance that comes free with the account it itself is comparable to other policies in terms of excess, cover and exclusions in the small print. I believe it is underwritten by Fortis. We have had the insurance since we have had an account with them (about 3 years). We have one of these accounts, but according to their website, its only for the "Premier Current Account" not the "Direct" one, but we have a Direct one and still have the insurance.

A couple of things to be aware of (or at least for me) is firstly the policy is restricted to Europe only these days (but their definition of Europe does extend to any country on the med so I would assume that would include Egypt and Morocco) - it used to be worldwide.

Secondly, only the account holder is covered, or both if a joint account. To add kids costs - this used to be free.

Also, it does not cover skiing unless £75 is paid.

So if you are staying in Europe in the summer and just the account holders are travelling its OK. We found it worked out cheaper to get a single trip family insurance policy for our trip to Greece this summer rather than pay the £42 to add them on it.

I also have free travel insurance with Alliance and Leicester. My husband and I will be going to Spain in October and as he had an angina attack in April I thought I would phone them. I was connected to the medical screening department and surprise, surprise, they will not cover him for this condition. I thought I would maybe have to pay something extra but apparently it does not work like that. Now I will have to browse the internet to see if I can find someone who will give us a reasonable quote. So much for the free travel insurance, what a con.

Yes I've had this for a few years.

Have had to make a claim a couple of times - on both occasions the claim was handled speedily and I landed up with more than I was strictly entitled to.

A pity it's no longer worldwide but it's good for what it is.
