tip toeing around a collegue.

Does any one work with somebody who has a incredibly short fuse?

I have to work next to somebody who you have to treat like a ticking time-bomb, any little thing will cause them to explode. They constantly and openly moan how much they hate working here and is constantly looking on job boards, applying for jobs and writing up C.Vs during work time.

Its incredibly demoralising.

They have just been on holiday for two weeks and the atmosphere at work during that time has been bliss. People don't have to tiptoe around and are able to talk freely, without fear of sarcastic comments and tantrums.

Oh and this person is also a hypercritic.

It's been like this for two years. I just wish they would up and leave already and let the rest of us get on with work.

I wouldn't bother tip toeing round anyone, people like that enjoy controlling other people's behaviour. The more you do it the more they expect it.
Treat like a toddler, ignore the bad behaviour, they'll soon get fed up of not being noticed
The mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o

A winner listens, a loser just waits until it is their turn to talk:)

It sounds like they're very unhappy .... I guess everybody's too wrapped up in themselves to get to know the person and find out why. They probably feel isolated and alone :(

Set up some suitable job searches on the main site and keep forwarding anything suitable to your colleague.

I agree with the "get to know him/her" approach. Get him a coffee, ask how his holiday was etc. you all feel Uncomfy with him but chances are he feels the same with you all.

Our manager, director and everyone else knows how miserable they are here. There not exactly quite about it. They will openly say how rubbish it is to work here.

It simply because they don't want a office job and scared of the unknown to actually apply for a different job.

After two years, its starting to get really old. The manager doesn't know how to handle it, is there a way to handle it? Other than moving them internally to another department that they might enjoy?

I'm dreading Monday as they are expected back, so we will all have to go back to being quite.

my last boss was like that, had a narcissitic personality and would explode if you dared challenge him, or if he was found out to be wrong

I asked them to make me redundant in the end. You go to work to do a job, not manage insecure peoples problems
