I moved out of a place four years ago, was only there 3 months, thought I had told all people who needed to know my new address. But I received a totally unexpected (and wrongful) bill for £496 from a previous council. I didn't hear about it for three years, and the appeal time was 13 months. So I had quite some argy bargy to get that bill removed.

I will now always pay for postal redirection.

Definitely yes, it's amazing just how many people you forget about. You might get sent a notice by a government agency or court. Some old creditor comes back to try and claim disputed money, they end up with a CCJ you don't even know about because you've moved.

I would say yes, it's worth it, because you never know what might turn up and I don't trust other people to forward on post.

It's been a couple of years since I moved out of my parents home and I still get random pieces of mail turning up at theirs. Every time I think right that's definitely it, there can't be anybody left I haven't changed my address with, then some company who has never written to me before will send something to their address.

    Do it for a year.

That's enough time for any forgotten annual statement / friends/ family to get in touch...

    Was invaluable for me.

If you don't set up redirection then don't expect or ask the new occupiers to forward anything to you. In fact you should do the opposite and leave a note telling them to bin all post addressed to you.

    ETA

If you are not prepared to do the above then you need to set up redirection

I used to work in Fraud, previous address fraud is common, usuaally due to somebody not redirecting their post or having an external mailbox so I'd be careful.

One of the things I forgot to notify was the TV licence.

It came out of my bank every month so I knew it was being paid but I kept getting letters addressed to the occupier new address which I ignored but eventually I had to contact them to confirm I was paying the licence as they work by address.

Mind you in that case I don't know if the people who had moved into my old address had been paying, if so it must have shown up 2 licences were being paid for the same address. Not my problem though.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

Does the mail turn up because you haven't informed people? Or as you say it is from people who haven't written to you before which is something nobody can control I suppose whether redirection is set up or not. And I would certainly not contemplate redirection over more than a year.

I certainly wouldn't expect anyone to forward my post.

In fact, as I pointed out, my reason for this post is that I get very little actual mail as all of my important accounts are dealt with online. All that I really get are circulars, coupons and general junk mail. Nothing of real importance.

I am sure any future occupant can make their minds up what to do with any junk mail that comes through in my name - and binning it won't stop it. Returning it to sender might.

Yes, your TV License is based on your address. You could actually have been fined for not having one for the address you are using equipment at even if you are paying for one registered at another address.
