I asked Virgin to close my account, which they have done but they say they will hold my details and send a confirmation letter in 7 years  so what if I want to take out another card in say a years time, it will show that I already have crefit when I don't x

Regardless of what they hold, with the CRAs it should show up as settled for the next 6 years.0

No. They'll just keep your transaction history on file.0

I see, I did wonder about that, thought it was a bit strange x0

They will also re-open the account if a continious authority payment goes through, so make sure you have none authorised on the card. If you do have any cancel them now.0

It's not that strange. I recall someone posting about applying for an Amex card 10 years after having payment issues with them. Amex still the details on file and refused the application due to past history.0

Companies protecting themselves against bad debtors is one thing, the OP is simply closing the card, it should show as settled on the credit record and retained for 6 years in line with the DPA - think the wording of the letter is just confusing, they won't count an X year old closed credit account as part of available credit if the OP applies for a card in the futureSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
