Renting - credit check advice

Hi all,
I am in the process of seperating from my partner and will be looking to rent privately.
Last November I started a DMP with Stepchange and now have 3 defaults on my credit record. I have met all my payments on my DMP, pay my mortgage every month where I currently live and I am now panicking I will never be able to rent a property due to my poor credit record
I only defaulted as I want to sort myself out and this is a way to clear my debts for good.
If I fail the credit check - will this be it as I have to pay nearly £200 for the property to be taken off the market or will they give me another option like a guarantor?
Thanks

1: they only check public records
2: dont pay anything until you know their criteria for acceptance / rejection0
