Home Buyers Report confusion

Offer on a house accepted, mortgage with tescos who have a partner calling us if we wish to have a more advanced survey as opposed to a valuation (the 2 options when applying for the mortgage were standard valuation & scottish home buyers report)
my question is
1) Is it worth paying for a decent survey? The house is on a small estate of similar houses and is about 25 years old and looks in very good condition
2) if I elect to have a proper survey, can I elect a different surveyor to the one tesco have pushed (countrywide).

1) depends on your preference. how competant do you feel to spot issues yourself? How much of a gamble are you willing to take? Do you have a friendly/family builder/expert?
2) Yes of course. Use one recommended by friends/famiy, or get quotes fro several RICS surveyors.0 -
Yup, I second G_M. It's worth putting yourself in the picture of what you're taking on. Choose one yourself, you don't have to go with CW and I'd recommend that you don't. Someone who's been operating locally for a while is a good bet, as they'll know the local housing stock well.0
