Student account declined from Santander.

Hi all,

So a few years ago, I took out a car on finance which I am still paying at the moment, and have a few grand left to pay off.
I have been accepted on a university course, and today I tried to open up a student account with Santander.
When I move away to uni, my parents have agreed to carry on paying the car off.
I went into the branch, and gave all my details, only to be told it had declined & they couldn't give me an answer for 48 hours.
I'm guessing the reason for this would be because of the credit in my name as I have never ever missed a payment?
Can anyone tell me; is a student account really necessary at uni? Or could i cope without one? Any other input, on what to do next would be great.

Thanks.

What answer if you've been declined already?
If you think they will tell you the reason, they never tell the genuine one.

Absolutely not. It's a bonus as normally it comes with a free overdraft and some other perks.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
He said, I wouldn't get an answer as to why I was declined for 48 hours (as he's going to appeal the decision).

    Thanks very much!

I didn't have a student account while at Uni.
