Sick animals

Downside with everything on forums is we can only go on what is posted and how we interpret the information, many people will jump down someones throat without knowing much, also many give very little information and expect a detailed response.
With animal insurance, I decided to stop mine when I knew I could afford treatment if necessary, apart from liability cover, I can now put away what I save on insurance which is huge and pay for any eventuality, the restrictions on the policies got way too much like known breed issues (having an old GSD these are restricted, trust me not all policies are £10 a month!!!) excess which went very high etc. All just goes into the 'dog fund' which actually should be an 'animal' fund but it's there to cover any problems.
What annoys me highly is those who expect the likes of the 'PDSA' to pick up the bill regardless, a animal owner who lives near me was extremely shocked to find out they don't even cover our area when her dog took ill, she just expected them to. If someone is in extreme hardship suddenly when it happens fair enough, but just relying on services like this I believe is wrong!
The only time I have asked for advice (on a dog forum) is when my dog had a weeping eye and I couldn't get in contact with the vet, this was then resolved with an out of hours vet who said wait until the Monday so I then requested advice on what would help ease it for him until then. One day I might be more organised...........
