Help - Laptop not booting up - ? Virus

Hi all,My work colleague was using her laptop last week, she had inserted a cd containing photos and also a card reader also containing photos. She is unsure if she has antivirus protection. She tried to connect to the internet for about 30mins but it would not let her connect. She shut the laptop down, upon rebooting, it gets as far as the logon screen then whenever you try to log on a window pops up as follows:WINDOWS PRODUCT ACTIVATIONThis copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on.Do you want to activate windows now?If you click "no" the computer shuts itself down.If you click "yes" a further window appears as follows

hi that is windows genuine advantage. it either means you
    • havent activated windows.
    • its a trial copy and it has expired.
if it is a real copy of windows (u have a windows sticker on the side, a shiny label with a long number on it 26 digits i think)

then go through that setup, and activate over the phone. but only do that if u have a sticker on the side of ur pc.

    Hi Richy

Thanks for the advice, however if that is the case why does it not let you activate it. When you click activate it comes up with that error message

ms00be.exe Application ErrorThe instructions at 0x604a296e referenced memory at 0x00000000 The memory could not be read. Click on ok to terminate the program or click on cancel to debug.

It is a legit copy of windows as it was bought from PC world nearly 2 years ago.

I am not convinced this is not a virus?

    Ring Microsoft.,,

If you want access to any files for diagnosis, in particular c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl and .bak , disconnect from ethernet/turn off router, login, answer yes to "activate..", Windows key and U, click top left of narrator window, about, click on microsoft weblink, it opens up IE, type in c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe in address bar, open it, copy c:\windows\explorer.exe c:\windows\exp.exe, then put c:\windows\exp.exe in IE address bar, then you should have an explorer window and a prompt window to do things in.

one thing you could try is.
    copy c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl c:\windows\system32\wpa.1

    copy c:\windows\system32\wpa.bak c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl

or rstrui and try a system restore.
