Sending money to the Philippines

Not strictly holiday related but I couldn't see a more suitable forum to put it in.

We have a relative in the Philippines who we need to send money to regularly for college fees. Does anyone know the simplest and cheapest way to do it.

I thought it'd be Paypal Friends and Family but I've been told this is quite an expensive way of doing it.

Thanks in advance

Have you looked at the cost of getting them a pre-paid card like FairFX Anywhere and loading that as and when?
You'd need to make sure the card was registered at your address though.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Give Transferwise a try, very low fees (<1%) and you get the true (mid-market) exchange rate:

Key question: does the relative have a local bank account?

Does this require the person receiving the money to have a bank account?

For small amounts, xe.com might be more cost-effective: worse exchange rates but no fees.

http://azimo.com is also worth a look. I've used this several times to send money to Argentina (Azimo is particularly good for Argentina as it uses an exchange rate somewhere between the official exchange rate and the parallel "blue" rate, which is considerably better than the official rate; most transfer options use the official rate). Don't know how competitive it is for other countries. They offer cash pick-up options in many countries.

Yes of course, it would be helpful if you knew that.

She doesn't have her own account but will be using her aunt's.

The amount will probably be around £100 per month

I live in Phils. Another way to send is MoneyGram. You send from UK and it's there within a couple of hours.

And presumably that speed (and level of service) comes at a price.
